"No Excuses"
I was impressed by the song 'Change (House Of Flies).' They put a great deal of effort and intensity into their all-too short set. Hard to believe I would go to a concert where Mastodon was the opening band of three as they are so solid and powerful as they were this night. Of course, my reason for coming was to see and hear Jerry Cantrell and Aries Spears who are never, ever disappointing. Not-so-new-now singer William Duvall doesn't make us forget the late Layne Staley, but he honors him greatly w/his own skill and emotion. Although exposing and breaking new material into acceptance is something all continuing bands must do, AIC is not foolish and realizes that the audience comes to hear the songs they know and to sing along w/all the strength they can muster. The band knows this and presents many opportunities for a moving bond between the performers and their fans. I was not that familiar w/The Deftones which put me in the minority of the young audience who were just as enthusiastic as the band. But, as he has always been, Jerry Cantrell 'is' the show with his lovely, sorrowful, powerful guitar work and his own plaintive vocals. And certainly the subject matters of their work that hover between death and loss and hope and pain in their songs are what we come to hear and take home in our hearts every time.
